DON’T BE ENVIOUS OR JEALOUS OF OTHERS

📖: Psalm 37:1-40

Confession: Psalm 91

Envy and jealousy are emotions of the heart that most of us feel from time to time, but we must be very careful not to allow it dominate our hearts because at the end of the day, it affects our spiritual growth. Envy is a feeling of wanting what another person has, like status, power, and wealth. Jealousy is when we are not satisfied with what God has blessed us with. Jealousy and envy creates strife, hatred, and can lead to destruction. It has it’s roots in pride, financial problems, depression, vantiny, and selfishness (Ecclesiastes 4:4), and can also create trivalry amongst siblings.

Jealousy varies, it can be jealousy of affection which is where a husband is jealous of another person flirting with his wife; this is not sinful. But when it is obsessive Jealousy it is sinful.
Some examples in the Bible that shows jealousy and envy as sinful: Cain killed Abel because of jealousy (Genesis 4:3-8); Joseph’s brothers sold him as a slave to Egypt (Genesis 37:4-11); Miriam and Aaron (Numbers 12:1-2); the prodigal son and his brother (Luke 15:25-30); Saul and David (1 Samuel 18:7-9); even in the house of God, there’s jealousy and envy (Philippians 1:15). We must  never compare ourselves with others (Galatians 6:4). Insecurity leads to jealousy.

Today’s generation depend on social media for what is happening in the world, thereby contributing to the increase in jealousy and envy due to our materialistic society. We must be very careful with what we post on social media so that we don’t cause others to envy and commit sin (Galatians 5:15; 1 Corinthians 8:9). The human eyes are never satisfied, hence we must guide against what we allow our eyes to see (Proverbs 27:20). Envy and jealousy are sin and it does not exhibit Christ-like attributes of the fruit of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. We can never be happy when envious or jealous of another person, it will only cause us pain.

We are in this world but not of this world (John 17:16) and until we realize what is most important in our lives and what matters the most to us, we will continue to struggle in our Christian journey. Proverbs 14:39 says “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. Therefore, let us strive and set our minds on things above and not earthly things (Colossians 3:2) and not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2). To renew our mind we must meditate on God’s Word, pray against the spirit of jealousy and envy (Romans 13:13) and allow the Holy Spirit to assist us in renewing our spirit with the spirit of love (1 Corinthians 13:4; 1 Peter 2:1-2). Let us strive to change our fix our eyes on Jesus Christ, who alone can save us. For those yet to surrender their lives to Jesus, this is not negotiable, do so now, tomorrow might be too late. DO IT NOW! Have a relationship with God.

PRAY THIS; in the name of Jesus, I repent of my sins, come into my heart and I will make You my Lord and Saviour. Stay connected! Stay focused! Have a blessed day. Shalom!!!
