THE TRUE VINE

📖: John 15:1-27

Confession: Psalm 91

“I AM” points to God’s deity, and was first used by God when He revealed Himself to Moses (Exodus 3:14). The eternal being of God is He is the “I AM”. In the Old Testament, the vine was the Israelites. God used them to accomplish His purpose in the world. As the Vinedresser, God loved and cared for them. He was unhappy with them because of their attitudes. They were imperfect. Jesus, the Son of God came to the world, lived with mankind and He is perfect and “the true Vine”.

Jesus said in John 15:1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener”. There are various passages in the Old Testament which refers to the people of Israel as a vine and God, the Father the Vinedresser. “I am the true Vine” is the last of the seven “I AM” declarations of Jesus’ statements that were recorded. Other “I AM” statements: Bread of life (John 6:48); Light of the world (John 8:12); Door (John 10:9); Good Shepherd (John 10:11); Resurrection and life (John 11:25); Way, and the truth (John 14:6).

According to the Gospel of John 15:1, Jesus said “I am the true vine” and the branches refers to believers. Jesus is saying to His disciples that He is the true Vine and they are the branches. Jesus knows that with human nature, the branches cannot survive without the Vine, and for the branches to survive; we must abide in the Vine and He the Vine will abide in us. We cannot bear fruit and can do nothing of our own without the Vine. Any branch that does not bear fruit will be taken away; and the branch that bears fruit will not be purge, rather the branch will bear more fruit. Matthew 7:16-20 says by their fruit, you will know them. The fruit means righteous attitude, having the fruit of the spirit, through the help of the Holy Spirit, (Galatians 5:22-23). Acts 17:28 “For in him we live and move and have our being”. As some poets have said, we are Jesus’ offspring”.

Jesus Christ, “The True Vine” reconciled us to God by shedding His Blood and died on the cross (Romans 5:10). Our salvation was purchased by the Blood of Jesus. We must realize that we cannot achieve anything on our own except through Jesus Christ, therefore we must NOT take our Salvation for granted. If we should lose our salvation, we might not be able to get it back and it will affect us from bearing fruit. When we commit sin, is like nailing Jesus again on the cross. We have the opportunity today to re-examine our Christian journey and remain good branches for the Vine. Let us strive to live a holy life till the end. For those yet to surrender their lives to Jesus, this is not negotiable, do so now, tomorrow might be too late. DO IT NOW!

PRAY THIS; in the name of Jesus, I repent of my sins, come into my heart and I will make You my Lord and Saviour. Stay connected! Stay focused! HAPPY EASTER and a blessed week. Shalom!!!
