📖: 2 Kings 2:1-14

Confession: Isaiah 61:7

“When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied” (2 Kings 2:9).

It was no secret in Israel that Elijah was a great prophet of God. Elisha became his assistant in unfathomable manner, when he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, Elijah found him and simply cast his “Mantle” upon him. Elisha’s background was not known, all we know was that he came from a wealthy background. Elisha went on to serve under the ministration of Elijah and the two became inseparable in life.

Towards the end of Elijah’s life, before he “was taken up into heaven in the chariots of fire and horses” (2 Kings 2:11), Elisha requested to inherit a double portion of Elijah’s anointing (2 Kings 2:9). Elijah put a condition on Elisha’s request with his response of “You have asked a  difficult thing” (2Kings 2:10). As Elijah was being taken up, Elisha cried out, “My father! My father and Elijah took hold of his garment and tore it in two dropped it, and he picked up the cloak that had fallen from Elijah (2 Kings 2:12-13). The torn cloak that Elijah dropped represted Elisha’s double portion and the beginning of miracles in Elisha’s ministry.

Similarly, when we go to God with our prayer petition and requests, there is a condition stipulated. Other times without any condition, we receive from God even when we don’t deserve the unmerited favours. Isaiah 61:7 says “Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours”.

When we petition and make our heart desires known to God, we must be bold and request big and impossible things because Jesus said anything we ask in His name, God will do it. We must understand that God is God of time and season (Ecclesiastes 3), He will make everything work together for our good (Romans 8:28) at His own timing and not ours. During the period of waiting, we must not allow any obstacle to derail us from receiving from God. We need to be focused, encourage ourselves with the Word of God, be patience, and obedient.

God will exceed our expectations. God will answer our request and give us more than we could ever ask or imagine; He will take us to our next level in life. For us to be qualified for a double portion blessing from God, we must be born again Christians and have a relationship with God through Jesus  Let us have faith and believe in God’s promises of blessings. Stay connected! Stay focused! Have a blessed weekend. Shalom!!!
